Skincare do's and don'ts

Can anyone please tell me why on earth is flawless skin so much to ask for? Why the hell is is such hard work? Unfortunately, like most other things this too doesn’t come easy, it takes work and dedication, routine, being persistent. Yes, hard work I know – half the time it drives me insane, but we all gotta do what we gotta do, and that’s take care of our skin and also consider all the smaller thing we don’t usually consider.

 

Number 1

You are what you eat

Yup, you literally are exactly what you put into yourself! All your new skin cells form from what you eat, so basically that is what your skin becomes – if it does not get the right amount of water, or nutrients and vitamins it will cause dehydration, breakouts, acne, etc, etc.

DO : Eat fresh fruits, greens, sufficient protein and vitamins. A diet rich in Vitamin C and low in fats and sugar promotes radiant skin.

DON’T : Eat too much spicy and fermented foods, salt, citrus fruits, fried foods. Blander food like oats, rice and applesauce will benefit your skin more.

 

 

Number 2

H20 to the rescue

We all know exactly how important is for your health.

DO : Hydrate the heck out of yourself. Have lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses – you know the drill. Fruit and veggies also contain lots of water especially watermelon and cucumbers.

DON’T : Ignore rose water, just because it is fragranced water doesn’t mean it is bad. It helps to reduce and prevent eye puffiness in the morning, maintains pH balance and naturally hydrates the skin with just a spritz of it.

Number 3

Have a spa day every day?

Well, why not. Taking care of your skin as of TODAY will be the BEST thing you have ever done for yourself, especially when you hit your not so young days anymore. See your every day routine as ‘me time’ the 20min or whatever you take out of your day to look after yourself.

DO : Have a regular skincare regimen. A constant use of products that works for you and having a routine your skin is use to will benefit you so much. It is just like having a balanced diet but for your skin.

DON’T : Forget to pamper yourself. Give yourself a gentle facial massage with your facial oil every 2nd night before bed. Put on a mask twice a week and don’t forget to exfoliate at least once a week too.

 

 

Number 4

Have healthy habits

Make time for yourself, this is sometimes SO hard for me and I am very guilty of this – I neglect myself because I am just too busy.

DO : Make time for yourself, you have to. Try and avoid stress – I can’t seem to get this one right, stress finds me. If you are stressed there is no colour in your face and your skin breaks out for know reason. This happens because the body produces cortisol and other hormones when you stress that causes these breakouts.

DON’T : Neglect your jaw line and facial muscles (Remember my face yoga post).  For just 5min a day, perform facial exercises. This way you will also naturally reduce wrinkles and fine lines and also prevent them from forming.

Number 5

Goodbye acne

We all hates nasty breakouts – follow these tips.

DO : Wash your face with warm water – why? This opens up the pores, to get rid of all the nasties that form those terrible pimples. Do this twice a day. Try to also make sure your cleanser contains something with anti bacterial properties, to kills all the germs DEAD that tries to set up a little piece of land on your skin.  When washing your face, move in small circular motions.

DON’T : Pop your pimples. Yes, we all do that – this will only cause more swelling and more redness, we all know that too. If you feel a pimple coming your way – cleanse the area properly with some rose water, and place a green tea bag on it for about 10min. Also, if you wear glasses or sunnies, clean them too – as they can too cause pimples and clogged pores if they are not germs free.

Number 6

Beauty Sleep

Ah, a good nap can do you wonders!

DO : Try and get your full 8 hours of sleep every night. If you don’t get enough time in lala land, your skin gets tired just like you do – it sags and you get bags and feel and look puffy. Honey on your skin can soothe it naturally. If you have a stressed skin, put a honey mask on once or twice a week.

DON’T : Forget to wash and moisturize your face before you go to bed. Before bed however avoid too hot water, as this can dry out your skin, just like heaters does.

 

 

Number 7

Sweat it out

Exercise benefits our health tremendously – and our skin too!

DO : Exercise regularly. Any form of exercise will give your body the necessary blood circulation it needs and accelerate the cleansing process of your entire body. You will notice an instant glow on your face after a workout – even if it is a brisk walk around the block on days you don’t have time.

DON’T : Skip skincare before and after a workout – I am once again guilty of this as I for some reason thought it’s totally fine to not wash my face before I train, because I will do it after. Uhm, hello, NO! Sweating and getting hot opens up the pores which then allows the dirt you didn’t wash off your face before your workout to slip into your pores and then cause pimples and clogged pores. Make sure to wash your face before you go train and apply a pore minimizing toner to help minimize the production of oil. Number 8

Sun and skin

Here too, you know the drill

DO : Apply sunscreen with AT LEAST a SPF of 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Sun = wrinkles, age spots and often skin problems. Make sure your sunscreen label reads ‘noncomedogenic’ or ‘nonacnegenic’ so that the product does not cause blocked pores. My favourite is the Benefit Dream Cream.

DON’T : Skip sunscreen! Whether it is cloudy or rainy or cold – no excuses.

Number 9

The Golden Rule

REMOVING YOUR MAKEUP BEFORE BED!

DO : ALWAYS, and I mean always remove your makeup before hitting the sheets. The skin needs to breathe over night and makeup prevents that. This CLOGS your pores and may cause blemishes and blackheads. Don’t have makeup remover – olive oil does the trick 100% and it is all natural and moisturizing too.

DON’T : Forget to exfoliate your skin on a regular basis. At least once a week like mentioned above. We exfoliate to remove dead skin cells that build up on your skin to reveal a gorgeous healthy glow and prevent clogged pores. Remember to put a nourishing mask on after exfoliation.

 

 

I hope this post taught you something, perhaps made you rethink some of your habits you might want to change and work on! It for sure made me rethink a lot of bad habits!
