7 Tips to a happier, healthier skin that glows!

We all want a gorgeous skin that glows, that's healthy and that is happy! Here are my TOP tips and advice on how to achieve this. I wish it was as easy as 1, 2, 3, but it's not - good skin takes time, effort and patience!

Tip 1 :


I know, you know—you've heard it a million times, but wearing sunscreen is really the easiest way to look younger for life. Ninety percent of wrinkles are from sun exposure! This also means no slacking during winter months either, the sun still shines during winter, it is just the air that is cold! Not the actual sun too! Look for a sunscreen formula that offers broad-spectrum protection to guard against UVA rays – these are the ones that cause premature aging, and UVB rays – the rays which are one of the main causes of skin cancer.


Tip 2 :

Clean your makeup brushes

A British study found that 72% of women never wash their brushes or sponges, wait WHAT? Ladies, this is super important! Leaving your brushes unwashed, causes bacteria to grow in your brushes and dust to collect on it, this causes breakouts! You have to wash loose powder brushes every two to three weeks, and those used to apply foundation once a week. Mix a couple of drops of gentle facial cleanser, baby shampoo works great too, in lukewarm water in a cup, swish your brushes around, rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, and lay flat to air dry

Tip 3 :

Serum or Facial oil

Serum is much more concentrated than cream or lotion, so you tend to only need a small amount daily to see results. Look for one with antioxidants, the skin's major defense against free radicals and stress, and pent peptides, which are a must-have when it comes to boosting collagen, the support structure that gives skin a firm, youthful, glowing appearance. For best results, apply facial oil/serum to a freshly washed skin, follow with sunscreen or moisturizer to lock in the hydration. Tip 4 :

Apply your skincare in the correct order

The order in which you apply your skincare products could be even more important than the products themselves. The easiest way to remember the order of your skincare products is obviously makeup removing, then double cleanse with a cleanser suited for your skin type and after that apply thinnest to thickest product. Reach for those with the most active ingredients as soon as you have washed your face and pat onto skin dry, like your toner, anything that's water soluble should goes first, that will balance your pH level out and your skin will be ready for a serum. Active ingredients are the most powerful, so you want them to come into direct contact with your skin. If you're using more than one active product like an antioxidant serum and Retin-A, start with the thinner one of these too. Lastly, products that are thicker and creamier will follow. If you do it in reverse, the heavier cream will block the ingredients of the lighter one from penetrating the skin, so they won't have any impact.



Tip 5 :

Exfoliate to minimize the appearance of pores

Enlarged pores are one of the most common beauty complaints. Pores appear larger when they're filled with dirt, oil, dead skin cells, and keratin, a protein that lives on the surface of skin. The only way to remove those plugs is to exfoliate and then only they seem to shrink, meaning they will appear smaller because whatever is inside of it making it appear bigger will be removed. To clear out the gunk, start exfoliating regularly with daily applications of salicylic and glycolic acid. Then add a cleansing system, like a Clarisonic or a Pore cleansing pad to soften and smooth skin, and clear the dead surface cells. To keep pores from getting even bigger as you age, practice safe sun as mentioned in TIP ONE. Sun damage breaks down collagen, which can affect pore size as well.



Tip 6 :

Take off your makeup before bed

Leaving makeup and dirt on skin doesn't just clog pores, it can cause excessive dryness and even skin dandruff, like when your nose seems flaky. So let me explain this topic, most people just know not to sleep with their makeup on, but very few of us know WHY! Most makeup contains a sugar-type molecule that can grow yeast overnight, and I know that I don’t want yeast to grow on my face – it’s kind of like mold – YUCK! Don't forget to thoroughly remove eye makeup too, it can lead to bumpy rashes around the eyes or small white bumps called milia cysts.



Tip 7 :

Roll away your puffy eyes

Fluid fills up under our eyes each night, because we're lying down. Start by sleeping on two pillows to elevate the face. In the morning, massage away the excess fluid with the Detox Jade roller that has been refrigerated overnight. This will manually push out fluid. Lastly, I want to mention 3 things that are very important too!!

ONE, is to be patient with your skincare products

Miracles really won’t just HAPPEN!! Just like getting a good bod, it is the same with your skin, it takes time and effort and commitment. We're all in a hurry to see results, but we have to be patient too. Slapping on a product that cost R1000 won’t make you look like a million dollars the very next day. When you're starting a new product, use it every other day, and never try a few new buys at once. Even if you just got a new skincare system, introduce one product every three to four days at the least. You'll rarely experience dryness, irritation, and burning. And if you do, you'll know right away who the culprit is. Give any new potion at least 12 weeks (and up to 6 months) to see if it's really improving your skin before calling it quits.

TWO, keep your hands off your face

DO NOT PICK!! This could permanently damage skin. And yes I know this is hard, because I am guilty of this too! Every time you press against a pimple, it causes inflammation and distress to the skin. At the same time, bacteria is pushed deep inside the pore, and the oil glands burst, causing even more trauma. Woaw, trauma? YES!! The skin on your face is super fragile! The result? More acne, plus discoloration and scarring. If you're really hooked on popping, leave it to the pros and schedule regular monthly extractions with therapist that know what they are doing!

And THREE, try hit the sack early

It’s called beauty sleep for a reason. Sleep deprivation lowers circulation, which is why you look pale and washed out if you only get a few hours if lala time! says. It's also the best time to rejuvenate your skin. Your body's cellular renewal team has the night shift, so this is when you want to equip your skin with as many nutrients and hydrating ingredients it needs to do a fine job.


Then, I didn’t want to include what you eat in this post, but very briefly, what you eat does have a huge impact on your skin’s appearance!!

Try have less to no diary. Dairy contains hormones that stimulate your oil glands and your pores, leading to acne and breakouts.


PUT DOWN the French fries, yes, back away from the French fries (In a police officer voice). Diets high in fats and carbohydrates causes more wrinkles. Creamy cheeses and red meats are actually known as aging fats

Eat lots of veggies!! They are super high in antioxidants!


Broccoli especially, only a half a cup of raw broccoli is loaded with 65% of your daily Vitamin C. Vitamin C mops up free radicals that cause wrinkles and sagging of the skin. It also improves the visibility of fine lines and colour discoloration.

Snack on Watermelon, it helps reduce damage and redness on your skin caused by sun exposure!!


And stay hydrated with the good old h20, water helps clear toxins that cause inflammation and blemishes, It also assists with transporting nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells, which prevents dehydration. It can even make the skin appear fuller, hyaluronic acid that naturally exists in the skin will hold onto the water and create a wrinkle-plumping effect.


As you can tell, healthy skin aren't for the faint hearted and it takes time and effort and also consistency.
